In its 15th and 16th century heyday Dubrovnik was so famed as a centre of art and learning that it was subsequently dubbed the “Croatian Athens”. This was due in part to its enormous dynamism: a small city state ready to accept Germans, Catalans, Greeks, Italian, Jews and Muslims – anyone, in fact, so long as they were hard-working, educated and entrepreneurial.
